Popularity of controversial Wellness bloggers like Belle Gibson is a side-effect of major gaps in health system

The recent revelation of wellness blogger Belle Gibson is a disappointment to her large following of cancer patients. However, it is a sign of a deeper failing in the health system such that patients are looking to online personalities for health information that they should be receiving from the health system. The health system is in need of a major overhaul to cater to the wellness needs of society. Patient engagement programs for illness like cancer may be non-existent or largely disconnected and unemotional. Health promotion efforts should have stories of real patients

Transforming Consumer Experience in Healthcare

The healthcare ecosystem is becoming increasingly complex and consumer needs and expectations are escalating. The drive to create a more sustainable healthcare system means that industry players are forced to deliver new models of care whilst developing more sustainable business models under ever increasing budgetary conditions.  As cost cutting efforts reach diminishing returns, it has become obvious that the solution to this complex set of issues is to re-frame the problem, working back from patients and health consumers, and build models that deliver compelling experiences to consumers and superior health

Public Health Insights I shared with Derryn Hinch on Sky News

A few days ago I was given the opportunity by Sky News to share my views on a very timely health issue of significant importance to the general public. Foxtel’s Derryn Hinch hosted the discussion on vaping and e-cigarettes, an emerging phenomenon in Australia on his show Hinch Live. I was on a panel with another doctor, and the owner of an e-cigs company, who all shared different views on the topic. I explained the risks of e-cigarettes and the need to have careful regulations but that didn’t seem to

Is 2015 the ‘Year of Patient Experience’ for Australian healthcare?

As the Australian healthcare system continues to evolve, policies such as GP co-payments have raised controversy amongst patient groups. Indeed, when any complex system is looking to improve itself, a critical stakeholder from which feedback should be assessed is the end-user. However, when creating new policies we approach expert academics, industry bodies, doctors, nurses, practitioners, politicians and consultants, yet how often do we broadly consult healthcare’s end-user? Thankfully, state health departments have more recently emphasised quality metrics linked to patient experience. Many of our public hospitals are now required to

A New Paradigm of Prevention and Wellness is Coming to Healthcare

It seems that almost every conversation about the ‘future of healthcare’ includes discussion around prevention and wellness strategies. Governments and industry are acutely aware that our current healthcare systems are geared towards “sick care” i.e. treating people when they are unwell, rather than “well care” i.e. keeping people as healthy and productive as they can be. Whilst this is nobody’s fault, rather design by necessity, health leaders are realizing that the cost and resources required to treat sick populations could be better utilized if they were spent earlier in the

My Thoughts on How We Can Set the Healthcare System Right

I was recently interviewed by Informa for the upcoming Future of Medicare Conference in August where I will be speaking about the Future Solutions for Australian Healthcare Reform. Dr Avi, you began your career as a medical doctor in the UK and Australia, and have now successfully founded 3 companies as CEO. Could you tell us a bit about your career journey? In my time as a medical practitioner, I worked across the medical systems of the National Health Service in the UK as well as the public and private

Do Patient Copayments Produce Better Health Outcomes?

Rising healthcare expenses in developed nations have made it difficult for many people to seek the medical care they need. From 2011 to 2012, healthcare costs in the United States increased 3.7 percent, costing consumers $2.8 trillion, or $8,915 each person. Some analysts estimated the latest figures to be closer to $3.8 trillion with government spending at a whopping 17.9% of GDP. Australians spent $132.4 billion on healthcare, while people in the UK spent £24.85 billion. Government expenditure in both these countries sit at between 9-10% of GDP, which may
